The CompanyWhere are you located?Based in Livermore, CA, BigBrain SMB, Inc is a privately held and self funded company. What's with the name? Our typical client is a Small to Medium sized business, hence the use of acronym "SMB". What do you do?We provide Information Technology solutions for the San Francisco Bay Area Small and Medium businesses. Our services range from hosted applications designed to address a specific need to complete end to end management of a client's IT environment. The Mission
How do you do it?We accomplish this by using primarily Free and Open Source software. When appropriate and cost effective, we may implement a closed source system or a software component to resolve a particular problem or provide a particular feature, but only as a temporary measure until a reliable open source solution emerges. What makes you so special?
The ProductFree sounds good, but is it safe?Absolutely. We feel that our solutions are safer than high priced proprietary alternatives because they are based on well known and established Open Source projects. Which, compared with the aforementioned closed source alternatives tend to be:
Please note that we are referring to established, quality Open Source projects. Some good examples are Linux, Apache, Postfix, Cyrus IMAP and there are many, many more.
We feel that solutions based on established Open Source projects are especially appropriate for the Small and Medium businesses. Both proprietary and open source solutions require seasoned implementation and management expertise, in addition, the proprietary solution will cost you an upfront licensing fee for the privilege of using the closed source software as well as ongoing software license assurance fees. By contrast, a typical open source solution is free of both upfront license fees and ongoing software license maintenance fees so you only pay for implementation and support. But wait, there's more! Typically, the support (for this often under performing proprietary solution) also comes at an additional cost. Provided, of course that the solution is still under active development and support is available at all. It is not unheard of for a vendor of the proprietary closed source software to drop a particular solution from their product line, discontinue the development as well as support, leaving the customer out in the cold. Development of Open Source projects can get dropped as well, of course, but historically this just hasn't happened with established and popular open source solutions. In fact, they tend to prolifirate since the source code is open and anyone can fork a project if they feel it doesn't do something someone feels is needed. This is precisely the reason why there are so many Linux distributions out there. This is good news for you, the consumer of open source solutions, as it ensures that the technology you have invested in today will still be around five or ten years from now when you decide it's time to upgrade or migrate to something else. If it's free, why do we need you?
